UNC hires Greg Robinson as Defensive Coordinator

Gene Chizik has not been hired as the North Carolina Tar Heels defensive coordinator. New Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown hired a different coach to lead the defense.

Brown hired Greg Robinson to be the team’s defensive coordinator, according to FootballScoop. Robinson last coached in 2015.

Like Brown, both of these coaches were out of coaching for several years. Robinson was last the San Jose State Spartans defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2014 and 2015.

This is the third-time Brown and Robinson have worked together. Previously, the two worked together at the University of Texas.

He spent the 2013 season as the Longhorns defensive coordinator. Robinson spent the 2012 season as the Saint Francis (California) Golden Knights assistant coach at the high school level.

He was the Michigan Wolverines defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2009 and 2010. Robinson was the Syracuse Orange head coach from 2005 through 2008.

As the Orange head coach, he went 5-37. Prior to his arrival in Upstate New York, he was the Longhorns co-defensive coordinator in 2004.

He was the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator from 2001 through 2003. He also was the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator from 1995 through 2000.

Robinson spent the 1994 season as the New York Jets defensive coordinator. He was the team’s defensive line coach from 1990 through 1993.

He spent the 1989 season as the UCLA Bruins defensive coordinator. He was the team’s defensive line coach from 1982 through 1988.

Robinson was the North Carolina State Wolfpack linebackers coach in 1980 and 1981. He was an assistant coach with the Cal State Fullerton Titans from 1977 through 1979.

He began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Pacific Tigers in 1975 and 1976.
