The Charlotte 49ers have rescinded their contract offer to James Madison’s head coach Mike Houston on Friday. The team will go in a new direction to find a head coach.
Earlier in the week, Houston was mentioned as the school’s front-runner to replace Brad Lambert. However, after the East Carolina Pirates fired Scottie Montgomery, things got tricker.
Houston is now the front-runner to replace Montgomery. In addition, East Carolina can play Houston more money then Charlotte.
Charlotte paid Lambert $625,000 in 2018. However, East Carolina paid Montgomery $1.1 million.
With East Carolina paying more, Charlotte cannot match a potential offer from the Pirates. The 49ers will now turn their attention to 33-year-old Chattanooga, Tennessee native Will Healy.
He has been the Austin Peay Governors head coach for the past three seasons. His team has gone 13-21 in those three seasons.
In 2017, he guided the Governors to an 8-4 record. However, in the other two seasons, he has gone 5-17.
This season, the team went 5-6, including 3-5 within the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Governors began the season with a loss to then-No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs, 45-0, on September 1st. Austin Peay then won two straight games.
They defeated the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 24-0, on September 8th. They then defeated the Morehead State Eagles, 78-40, on September 15th.
Austin Peay fell to 2-3 with two straight losses. The Governors lost 37-7 to the then-No.24 UT-Martin Skyhawks on September 22nd. One week later, they were defeated by then-No. 8 Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 48-32 on September 29th.
The Governors improved to .500 with a 3-3 record when they defeated the Tennessee State Tigers. They won 41-27 on October 6th.
Austin Peay fell the next week to Southeast Missouri State Redhawks, 31-27, on October 13th. Two weeks later, they defeated the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 41-10.
They then went on a two-game losing streak. They were defeated by the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 17-13 on November 3rd. The following week, the team was defeated by the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 52-21.
In their season-finale, the Governors won 48-23 to the Murray State Racers on November 17th.
