According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Washington Nationals are close to acquiring Yan Gomes. It is not clear what package will go back to the Cleveland Indians.

With Gomes, they will improve the Nationals depth at the position. The team previously signed catcher Kurt Suzuki.

He signed a two-year deal with the team. He will be paid $10 million over those two season.

Once the deal is complete, the Nationals will have Gomes under their control for the next three seasons. Gomes is slated to make $7 million this season.

In 2020, he has a club option for $9 million. He also has an $11 million club option for the 2021 season.

He has spent the past seven seasons with the Indians. This season, he had a .266 batting average in 112 games. He also had 16 home runs and 48 RBIs in 403 at-bats.

The 31-year-old Sao Paulo, Brazil native has been traded for the second time in his career. On November 3rd, 2012, he was traded by the Toronto Blue Jays, along with Mike Aviles, to the Indians for Esmil Rogers.

Matt Wieters was the leading catcher last season. However, he will not return after his one-year deal expired.

Wieters had a .238 batting average in 76 games. He also had eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 235 at-bats.

Pedro Severino, Spencer Kieboom, and Miguel Montero also played catcher for the Nationals this past season.
