Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks have hired Colby Carthel as its new head football coach. Jeff Byrd served as the interim head coach this past season after Clint Conque resigned on August 6th.
Carthel takes over a program that went 2-8 in 2018. They also were 2-7 within the Southland Conference standings.
This comes one day after Jeff Traylor withdrew his name for consideration. Traylor is the Arkansas Razorbacks Associate Head Coach and Running Backs coach.
Carthel takes over a program that has gone 12-21 in the past three seasons.
The 42-year-old Floydada, Texas native has been the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions football team since 2013. He is 57-17 as the Lions head coach.
In the past three seasons, his team has gone 34-6. In 2017, his team also won the NCAA Division II National Championship.
This season, Carthel was the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year.
Prior to accepting the Texas A&M-Commerce head coaching job, he was the West Texas A&M Buffaloes defensive coordinator from 2006 through 2013. He also was the Abilene Christian Wildcats defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator from 2000 through 2006.
