The Central Michigan Chippewas have hired Jim McElwain as their new head coach. He replaces John Bonamego, who was fired after the season.
FootballScoop is reporting that a deal is in place for McElwain to be the new head coach. He will take over a 1-11 program.
He spent this past season as the Michigan Wolverines wide receivers coach.
McElwain is 44-28 as a college football head coach. He was a head coach with the Colorado State Rams and the Florida Gators.
He was 22-16 as the Rams head coach. He was 22-12 as the Gators, including a 3-4 record in 2017.
During an October 23, 2017 press conference, McElwain alluded to receiving death threats against himself and his players. However, that same day, the Gators administration said that did not find any additional details.
This caused the school to consider firing McElwain with cause. He agreed to part ways with the school following a 42-7 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Prior to accepting the Colorado State Rams head coaching position, he was the Alabama Crimson Tide Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach from 2008 through 2011. He also was the Fresno State Bulldogs Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach in 2007.
He spent the 2006 season as the Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach. He was the Michigan State Spartans Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers/Special Teams from 2003 through 2005. He also was the Louisville Cardinals Wide Receivers and Special Teams Coach from 2000 through 2002.
From 1995 through 1999, he was the Montana State Bobcats Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers/Special Teams Coach. He also was the Eastern Washington Eagles Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers coach from 1987 through 1994.
He began his coaching career as the Eagles graduate assistant in 1985 and 1986.
