Bulls promote associate head coach Boylen to interim head coach

The Chicago Bulls have promoted associate head coach Jim Boylen to interim head coach. He replaces Fred Hoiberg, who was fired by the team.

Boylen had been the team’s associate head coach since the 2015 season. This is his first opportunity as a head coach in the NBA.

He has previous head coaching experience in college basketball. He was the Utah Utes men’s basketball coach from 2007 through 2011.

As the Utes head coach, Boylen went 69-60. His best season with the team was a 24-10 record during the 2008-09 season and a first-round appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, also known as the March Madness tournament.

In his first two seasons with the Utes, he guided the team to a 42-25. However, in his final two seasons, he went 17-35.

Boylen guided the team to a 13-18 mark during the 2010-11 season before being fired.

After being fired by the Utes, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs before joining the Bulls.

Before the Utes, he was an assistant coach with the Michigan State Spartans from 2005-07. He also spent one season as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2004-05.

He also spent one season with the Golden State Warriors in 2003-04. Boylen worked for the Houston Rockets as an assistant coach from 1992 through 2003.

With the Rockets, he was part of two NBA Championships in 1994 and 1995. In 2014, he was part of the Spurs team that won the championship.

He began his coaching career with the Spartans. He worked there as an assistant coach from 1987 through 1992.
