The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed manager Dave Roberts to a contract extension. He is now signed through 2022.
His previous contract expired at the end of the 2019 season.
Roberts signed a four-year extension with the team on Monday.
“Keeping Doc as our leader on the field was a top priority this off-season,” Dodgers’ President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman said. “And now that we’ve accomplished that, we are excited to collectively shift all of our focus to doing all we can to bring a World Championship to our passionate fans.”
This extension has been in motion since November 6th when it was mentioned that the two sides were close to an extension. Nearly one month later, the team was finished.
As the Dodgers manager, the team won the NL West crown all three seasons. The team also has lost back-to-back World Series.
The Dodgers were defeated to the Houston Astros in Game 7 in 2017. Los Angeles lost to the Boston Red Sox in Game 5 this year.
All three seasons, the Dodgers have won 90 or more games. The 46-year-old Naha, Japan native guided the team to 91 wins in 2016. Then, in 2017, the team won a 104 games. They won 92 games this past season.
“When I was hired to lead this team three years ago, I said at the time that managing the Dodgers is truly the opportunity of a lifetime, and I feel the exact same way today,” Roberts said. “We’ve worked hard to develop a team and culture that will put us in position to win the World Series every season, but we still have yet to achieve our ultimate goal and that is what drives me each day. I want to thank Andrew, Stan Kasten and our outstanding ownership group for believing in me and keeping me in Dodger Blue, a uniform I’m so proud to wear.”
