Maryland Terrapins hire Mike Locksley as head coach

Matt Canada did not receive the Maryland Terrapins head football coach position. Canada spent the 2018 season as the interim head coach and guided the team to a 5-7 record.

Instead, the Mike Locksley has been named the team’s Head Coach. He spent the 2018 season as the Alabama Crimson Tide’s Offensive Coordinator.

The Tide is now looking for its fourth Offensive Coordinator in the past three seasons. He spent the 2017 season as the Tide’s Co-Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receivers coach.

Locksley was the team’s Offensive Analyst in 2016.

He spent the 2015 season as the Terrapins Interim Head Coach. He took over when Randy Edsall was fored on October 11th, 2015. As the Interim Head Coach, he went 1-5.

Prior to being named Interim Head Coach, he was the Terrapins Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach from 2012 through 2015. He spent the 2009 through 2011 seasons as the New Mexico Lobos Head Coach.

He went 2-26 in two-plus seasons. He was fired just four games into the 2011 season.

He was the Illinois Fighting Illini Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach from 2006 through 2008. He spent the 2005 season as the Fighting Illini Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach.

He was the Florida Gators Running Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator from 2003 through 2004. He was the Terrapins Running Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator from 1998 through 2002.

The 48-year-old Washington, D.C. native spent the 1997 season as the Terrapins Running Backs Coach. He spent the 1996 season as the Army Black Knights Wide Receivers and Tight Ends Coach.

In 1995, he was the Pacific Tigers Outside Linebackers coach. He then was the Navy Prep Naval Rams Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach in 1994 on Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. He also was the Navy Prep Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs coach in 1993.

Locksley began his coaching career as the Towson Tigers Defensive Backs Coach/Special Teams in 1992.
