The Washington Redskins have signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson. He signed s contract with the team for the rest of the season.
The Redskins were in desperate need of a backup quarterback. Colt McCoy suffered a season-ending injury on Monday night.
McCoy broke his leg at the beginning of the second quarter on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. According to reports, he played two seasons after breaking his leg.
Johnson was recently the No. 1 overall pick in the “Protect or Pick” Quarterback Draft in the Alliance of American Football. He was selected with the top pick by the San Diego Fleet franchise.
The 32-year-old Oakland, California native has not played organized football since the 2014 season with the San Francisco 49ers. He had been signed by the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills in 2015, New York Giants in 2016, and the Houston Texans in 2017, but did not play in a game.
He played in one game with the 49ers in 2014. He did not attempt a pass.
Johnson has made 29 appearances with five starts in his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and the 49ers. He is 0-5 as a starter. He has gone 96 of 177 for 1,042 yards. He also has five touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
