Colorado Buffaloes names Mel Tucker as head coach

The Colorado Buffaloes have named Mel Tucker as head coach. He becomes the head coach after being the Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator.

The Buffaloes had to wait to hire Tucker. He had to wait until the conclusion of the Southeastern Conference Championship game to accept the position. The Bulldogs faced the Alabama Crimson Tide for the SEC crown.

Tucker is receiving his first collegiate head coaching job. He replaces Mike MacIntyre, who was fired with one game left in the season.

Colorado named Kurt Roper as the interim head coach for the season finale.

The 46-year-old Cleveland, Ohio is now the 26th head coach in school history. He is the fourth head coach since the 2010 season.

Dan Hawkins was the head coach from 2006 through 2010. He then was replaced by Jon Embree, who lasted two seasons in 2011 and 2012. MacIntyre then replaced Embree.

Tucker has been the Bulldogs defensive coordinator since 2016. He also was the Alabama Crimson Tide assistant head coach and defensive backs coach in 2015.

He spent two seasons as the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator in 2013 and 2014. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 2012.

He was the Jaguars interim head coach in 2011 for five games. He guided the team to a 2-3 record.

Before being promoted to interim head coach, he was the Jaguars defensive coordinator from 2009 through 2011. He spent the 2008 season as the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator.

He was the Browns defensive backs coach from 2005 through 2007. He was the Ohio State Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator in 2004.

Tucker was the Buckeyes’ defensive backs coach from 2001 through 2003. He spent the 2000 season as the LSU Tigers defensive backs coach.

He was the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks defensive backs coach in 1999. He began his coaching career as the Michigan State Spartans graduate assistant in 1997 and 1998.
