Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets hires Geoff Collins as head coach

Geoff Collins has been named the new Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head football coach. Collins replaces Paul Johnson retired following the season.

He receives the job less day one day after Ken Whisenhunt withdrew his name from consideration. Collins inherits a team that went 7-5 in 2018.

The 47-year-old Conyers, Georgia native spent the last two seasons as the Temple Owls head coach. He went 15-10 with the team.

In his first season in 2017, he guided the team to a 7-6 record. In 2018, he coached the team to an 8-4 season.

Both years, the Owls received Bowl bids. Last year, he coached the team to a 28-3 win in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Owls received a bid to the Independence Bowl against the Duke Blue Devils this season. However, an interim head coach will be appointed to coach that game.

Before accepting the Owls head coaching position, he was the Florida Gators Defensive Coordinator in 2015 and 2016. He also was the Mississippi State Bulldogs Defensive Coordinator in 2013 and 2014.

He also spent two seasons as the Bulldogs Co-Defensive Coordinator in 2011 and 2012. Collins spent the 2010 season as the Panthers Defensive Coordinator.

He worked the 2008 and 2009 seasons as the UCF Knights Linebackers Coach/Recruiting Coordinator. He also was the Alabama Crimson Tide’s Director of Player Personnel in 2007.

He previously coached with the Yellow Jackets as their Recruiting Coordinator in 2006. Collins also served as the Western Carolina Catamounts Defensive Coordinator.

The Georgia native also served as a graduate assistant with the Yellow Jackets from 1999 through 2001. He spent two seasons as the Albright Lions Defensive Coordinator.

He previously served as the Fordham Rams Linebackers Coach in 1996. In 1995, he served as a Franklin Panthers High School Assistant Coach in North Carolina.

Collins began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Catamounts in 1993 and 1994.
