Tom Arth has been hired as the Akron Zips head football coach, according to FootballScoop. He replaced Terry Bowden, who was fired after the season.

Bowden guided the team to a 4-8 record in 2018. The team was also 2-6 within the Mid-American Conference.

This will be Arth’s third head coaching position. He previously was the Chattanooga Mocs head coach and the John Carroll Blue Streaks head coach.

Arth spent the last two seasons as the Mocs head coach. He went a combined 9-13 in those two seasons.

After a 3-8 record in his first season, he guided the Mocs to a 6-5 record in 2018. Chattanooga won its first four games of the season, before losing its next two games to the East Tennessee State Buccaneers and the then-No. 7 Wofford Terriers.

The team won its next two games to improve to 6-2 with wins over the Western Carolina Catamounts and the VMI Keydets. The Mocs then lost its final three games, losing to the Furman Paladins, Mercer Bears, and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Before being named the Mocs head coach, he spent four seasons as the Blue Streaks head coach. He guided the team to a 40-8 record, including a 12-2 record in his final season in 2016.

He is 5-3 all-time in playoff appearances, all as the Blue Streaks head coach.

The 37-year-old Westlake, Ohio native spent three seasons as the Blue Streaks assistant coach before being promoted as head coach.
