Two years ago, the UAB Blazers did not have a football program after their administration disbanded it. Fast forward two seasons, the Blazers won their first Bowl game in program history.
The Blazers defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies, 37-13, on Tuesday night. UAB won the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl over the Huskies at FAU Football Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida.
This win snapped a two-game Bowl skid. They lost 41-6 in the Bahamas Bowl last year to the Ohio Bobcats.
The team also lost 59-40 in the Hawai’i Bowl to the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors in 2004.
UAB also set a school record with its 11th win, the most in program history in one season. Since returning in 2017, the team is 19-8.
Blazers quarterback Tyler Johnston III went 17 of 29 for 373 yards. He also had four touchdowns and one interception.
Spencer Brown had 25 carries for 78 yards. Johnson III also had 10 carries for 28 yards.
Xavier Ubosi had seven receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Collin Lisa had four receptions for 64 yards. Andre Wilson had two receptions for 43 yards. Brown also had a three-yard touchdown reception.
Huskies quarterback Marcus Childers went 22 of 29 for 179 yards.
Tre Harbison had 18 carries for 49 yards and a touchdown. Childers had 18 carries for 35 yards.
Spencer Tears had six receptions for 50 yards. Ty Harmston had three receptions for 36 yards. Jauan Wesley had five receptions for 34 yards. Cole Tucker had two receptions for 22 yards.
UAB had 10 points in the second half. Johnston III hit Ubosi for a 66-yard touchdown reception. Nick Vogel also made a 42-yard field goal.
Northern Illinois had three points in the second half. Andrew Gantz made a 21-yard field goal.
The Blazers led 27-10 at halftime. Johnston III hit Ubosi for a 70-yard touchdown reception. Johnston III also hit Brown for a three-yard touchdown reception.
Johnston III hit Ubosi for a 46-yard touchdown reception. Vogel also made two field goals.
Huskies’ Harbison scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Gantz made a 27-yard field goal.
