The Arizona Cardinals are expected to fire head coach Steve Wilks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He will coach the final two games of the season before receiving the pink slip.
Wilks was hired by the Cardinals back in January. However, he has guided the team to a 3-11 record through 14 games.
Arizona has two games remaining. The Cardinals host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
They conclude the season with a road game against the Seattle Seahawks.
This was Wilks first head coaching opportunity in the NFL. After this experience with the Cardinals, it could be a while before he gets another shot.
Since becoming the Arizona Cardinals prior to the 1994 season, Wilks would be the first head coach, who was fired after one season. Buddy Ryan has the shortest tenure so far with 32 games in 1994 and 1995.
He also would be the first head coach since 1952, who lasted just one season as head coach after being fired. Joe Kuharich went 4-8 in 12 games.
The 49-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina native served as the Carolina Panthers Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator in 2017. He was the Panthers Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Backs Coach in 2015 and 2016.
He also served three seasons as the Panthers Defensive Backs Coach from 2012 through 2014. He also was the San Diego Chargers Defensive Backs Coach from 2009 through 2011.
Wilks was the Chicago Bears Defensive Backs Coach from 2006 through 2008. He also was the Washington Huskies Secondary Coach in 2005.
He also served as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Defensive Backs Coach in 2004. Wilks was the Bowling Green Falcons Defensive Backs Coach in 2003.
Wilks also served as the East Tennessee State Buccaneers Defensive Coordinator in 2002. He also served as the Appalachian State Mountaineers Defensive Backs Coach in 2001.
He also was the Illinois State Redbirds Defensive Backs Coach in 2000. He was the Savannah State Tigers head coach in 1999, where he guided the team to a 5-6 record.
He also was the Tigers Defensive Coordinator in 1997 and 1998. Wilks began his coaching career as the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls Defensive Coordinator in 1995 and 1996.
