Foley leads Owls into Walk-On’s Independence Bowl against Blue Devils

The Temple Owls face the Duke Blue Devils in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl on Thursday. The game will kick off at 1:30 pm EST at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Owls are 8-4 on the season. Four of their eight wins have come on the road (4-2 overall).

The Blue Devils are 7-5. Four of their seven wins have also come on the road (4-2 overall).

According to Covers.com Consensus Analysis, the Blue Devils have a 59% chance to win this game, according to their public poll. Their expert poll; however, gives Duke a 56% chance to win this game.

This is the first meeting between these two teams.

The Owls are 3-4 all-time in Bowl games. They won their last Bowl game, as they defeated the FIU Panthers, 28-3, in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl  on December 21st, 2017 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Temple lost 34-26 to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

The Owls will have an interim Head Coach in this game, as former Head Coach Geoff Collins accepted the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Head Football Coaching position after the season. Ed Foley will serve as the interim Head Coach.

He was the Interim Head Coach when the Owls were defeated by the Demon Deacons. He will be coaching in his second Bowl game, the most ever by a Temple Head Coach.

This will be Temple’s first appearance in the Independence Bowl.

The Blue Devils are 5-8 all-time in Bowl games. Duke has won their last two Bowl games.

They defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies, 36-14, in the Quick Lane Bowl on December 26th, 2017 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. They also won 44-41 over the Indiana Hoosiers in overtime to win the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on December 26th, 2015 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

Their last Bowl loss came in the Hyundai Sun Bowl in a 36-31 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils on December 27th, 2014 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

Like Temple, this is Duke’s first appearance in the Independence Bowl.

Temple has won its last three games. Their last loss came on November 1st in a 52-400 loss to then-No. 12 UCF Knights.

Duke has lost their last two games. Their last win came in a 42-35 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels on November 10th.

The Owls are averaging 35.6 points per game. They are averaging 420.3 total yards per game.

Their defense is allowing 24.7 points per game. Their defense is allowing 356.7 total yards per game.

Owls quarterback Anthony Russo has gone 173 of 299 for 2,335 yards. He has 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Ryquell Armstead leads the Owls backs with 210 carries for 1,098 yards and 13 touchdowns. Ventell Bryant leads the Owls receivers with 47 receptions for 659 yards and three touchdowns.
