Maple Leafs acquire Michael Hutchinson in trade with Panthers

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired goaltender Michael Hutchinson from the Florida Panthers. In exchange for the netminder, the Panthers are receiving a fifth-round draft pick in 2020.

He joins the Maple Leafs, who needed help in the net. Frederik Andersen is day-to-day with a groin injury.

The team had called up Kasimir Kaskisuo while Andersen was sidelined battling an injury.

The Maple Leafs also have Garret Sparks as their goalie. The 25-year-old Elmhurst, Illinois native backed up Andersen.

Andersen made 30 starts this season. He went 20-9-1 in those games with a 2.50 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.

The 28-year-old Barrie, Ontario, Canada native joins his third team with this move. He previously played for the Winnipeg Jets before joining the Panthers.

Hutchinson signed with the Panthers as a free agent on July 1st, 2018.
Hutchinson went 1-1-2 in four games with the Panthers. He had a 4.17 goals against average and a .839 save percentage.

In his career, he has gone 43-39-11 in 102 appearances, including 87 starts. He has a 2.65 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage.

Hutchinson could be the team’s third-string netminder behind Sparks and Kaskisuo until Andersen can return. When Andersen returns, the Maple Leafs front office will have to determine what to do next with him.
