According to sources, the Houston Cougars will fire Head Coach Major Applewhite. The move is expected in the next few days.

Applewhite had been the team’s head coach for the last two seasons. He guided the team to a 15-11 record.

We reported earlier today that the Cougars were considering firing Applewhite. FootballScoop reported that if Applewhite was to be fired, the team would target West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Dana Holgorsen as head coach.

Applewhite guided the team to an 8-4 season this past campaign. Yet, in their Bowl game, the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, the team was blown out 70-14 to the Army Black Knights at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas.

Following the loss, there were whispers that the Cougars may fire Applewhite. Now, that plan has taken shape and he will be fired.

He has lost all three Bowl games as the Cougars head coach. Besides the Cougars losing to the Black Knights in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl,  Houston lost 33-27 to the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Hawai’i Bowl at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawai’i on December 24th, 2017.

As an interim head coach, Applewhite guided the Cougars to a 34-10 loss in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 17th, 2016 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney, Nevada.

This season, the Cougars defeated the Rice Owls to begin the season with a 45-27 score on September 1st. The team also defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 45-18, on September 8th.

They fell to 2-1 with a 63-49 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders on September 15th.

The team went on a five game-win streak following the Red Raiders loss. They defeated the Texas Southern Tigers, 70-14, on September 22nd.

Houston also won 41-26 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on October 4th. The next week, the team defeated the East Carolina Pirates 42-20 on October 13th.

The team also won 49-36 over the Navy Midshipmen on October 20th. The Cougars ended their five-game win streak with a 57-36 win over then-No. 21 South Florida Bulls on October 27th.

Houston lost four of its five final games. The then-No. 17 Cougars lost 45-31 to the SMU Mustangs on November 3rd. The following week, the Temple Owls won 59-49 over the Cougars on November 10th.

The team won 48-17 over the Tulane Golden Hurricane on November 15th.

The Cougars ended the season on a two-game losing streak. They lost 52-31 over the Memphis Tigers on November 23rd. The team was then defeated 70-14 to No. 22 Army Black Knights in the Locked Heed Armed Forces Bowl on December 22nd.
