Cardinal will attempt to go 4-1 in Sun Bowl against Panthers

The Stanford Cardinal face the Pittsburgh Panthers on New Year’s Eve in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. The game will kick off at 2 pm EST on CBS from the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

The Cardinal are 8-4 on the season. Four of their eight wins have come on the road (4-2 overall).

The Panthers have a 7-6 record. They; however, have a 2-4 road record.

According to Covers.com Consensus Analysis, the Cardinals have a 56% chance to win this game, according to their public poll. Their expert poll; however, gives Stanford a 68% chance to win this game.

This is the fourth meeting all-time between these two teams. However, they have not faced each other since the 1932 season.

Stanford is 1-2 against Pittsburgh all-time. Their lone win came in a 7-6 Rose Bowl win on January 2nd, 1928.

Pittsburgh won 7-0 in their last meeting on November 26th, 1932. They also won 16-7 on December 30th, 1922.

The Panthers have a 13-20 all-time record in Bowl games. They have lost their last three Bowl games, though.

They were defeated 31-24 by the Northwestern Wildcats on December 28th, 2016 in their last Bowl loss at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. Their last Bowl game win came in a 30-27 win over the Bowling Green Falcons on December 26th, 2013 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

This is the Panthers fourth Sun Bowl appearance. They are 2-1 in the previous three games.

The Cardinal have a 14-14-1 all-time record in Bowl games. They have a one-game Bowl losing streak.

They were defeated 39-37 by the TCU Horned Frogs in their last Bowl loss in the Alamo Bowl on December 28th, 2017 in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Their last Bowl win came in a 25-23 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on December 30th, 2016 at the Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas.

This is the Cardinal’s fifth Sun Bowl appearance. They are 3-1 in their previous four games.

The Cardinal have won their last three regular season games. Their last regular season loss came in a 27-23 defeat to the Washington Huskies on November 3rd.

Stanford is averaging 29.6 points per game. Their offense is averaging 395.4 points per game.

Their defense is allowing 23.8 points per game. In addition, their defense is allowing 415.6 total yards per contest.

Cardinal quarterback K.J. Costello has gone 263 of 396 for 3,435 yards. He also had 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The Panthers come into this game with a two-game losing streak. Their last regular season win came in a 34-13 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on November 17th.
