Panthers trade Alex Petrovic to the Oilers

The Florida Panthers have traded defenseman Alex Petrovic to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday. In exchange, the Panthers are receiving defenseman Chris Wideman and a third-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Oilers have two third-round draft picks in the 2019 NHL Draft. The Panthers will receive the higher of the two picks.

This is the second straight day that the Panthers have made a trade. They shipped netminder Michael Hutchinson to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native will be going to his second team in his career. He had spent the last seven seasons with the Panthers.

This season, he has one assist for one point in 26 games. He also has a -8 in +/- and 24 PIM.

In his final game with the Panthers, he had a -1 in the Panthers win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. He also had 2 PIM.

The 28-year-old St. Louis, Missouri native joins his third team this season. He began the season with the Ottawa Senators before being traded to the Oilers on November 22nd for a sixth-round draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

With the Oilers, he appeared in five games. He had two assists for two points, along with a -2 +/-. He also had 4 PIM.

In his final game with Edmonton on Saturday night against the San Jose Sharks, he had one assist for one point. He also had four PIMs.

Petrovic may play with his new teammates at home against the Winnipeg Jets on New Year’s Eve. This is the final game of a five-game home stretch for the Oilers that began on December 18th.

If Petrovic is unable to play on New Year’s Eve, he may play in one of these games. He may play on January 2nd on the road against the Arizona Coyotes. If he doesn’t play in that game, he may play on January 5th in Los Angeles against the Los Angeles Kings or the following night against the Anaheim Ducks.
