The Oklahoma Sooners have signed head coach Lincoln Riley to a contract extension on New Year’s Day. Riley completed his second season as the Sooners head coach in 2018.
Riley will receive a salary increase with this signing. His new contract has to be approved by the OU Board of Regents later this month.
“We felt it [was] important to extend and amend Lincoln’s contract at this time as we want him at the University of Oklahoma for a long time,” Oklahoma President James Gallogly said. “He is a great coach and role model for our student-athletes. His record of success speaks for itself.
“Lincoln is also the right representative for our university in such a high-profile position. I am proud to work with him and anxious to support him as he takes our program into the future.”
The Sooners made this move because there was already speculation that Riley would be candidates for NFL head coaching positions. One of them is the Cleveland Browns because of 2018 No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield.
In two seasons, Riley has gone 24-4. He has guided Oklahoma to back-to-back 12-2 seasons.
However, after each regular season, the Sooners lost each Bowl game. This year, Oklahoma was defeated by the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff Semifinal in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Saturday night.
“My family and I are very appreciative of the support the University of Oklahoma has shown,” Riley said. “We’re thankful for the relationships we have with President Gallogly, Joe Castiglione, the OU Board of Regents and the entire Norman community. This has been a great home for us. We’ve had a great start and we’re excited for many more great years in the future.”
