End of CFP playoff speculation? Longhorns defeat Bulldogs in Sugar Bowl

The Georgia Bulldogs felt like they deserved to be in the College Football Playoffs. Following Notre Dame’s loss in the College Football Playoff to the Clemson Tigers, several players went on social media to say they deserved to be in the game.

The No. 15 Texas Longhorns defeated the No. 5 Bulldogs on New Year’s Day. The Longhorns defeated the Bulldogs, 28-21, in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Longhorns ended their season with a 10-4 record. They ended their season with a one-game win streak.

Texas improved to 29-24-1 all-time in Bowl games. They have won their last two Bowl games.

The Bulldogs fell to 11-3. They lost their final two games of the season.

With the loss, Georgia fell to 31-21-3 all-time in Bowl games. They now have a two-game Bowl losing streak.

Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger went 19 of 27 for 169 yards.

Tre Watson had 18 carries for 91 yards. Ehlinger had 21 carries for 64 yards. Keaontay Ingram had nine carries for 25 yards.

Lil’Jordan Humphrey had seven receptions for 67 yards. Collin Johnson had three receptions for 40 yards. Ingram had three receptions for 24 yards.

Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm went 20 of 34 for 212 yards. He also had three touchdowns and one interception.

Elijah Holyfield had 12 carries for 62 yards. Brian Herrien had four carries for 17 yards.

Riley Ridley had five receptions for 61 yards. Terry Godwin had two receptions for 33 yards. Jeremiah Holloman had a 31 yard reception.

D’Andre Swift had five receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown. Herrien had two receptions for 20 yards and a touchdown. Mecole Hardman had a three-yard touchdown reception.

Texas scored eight points in the second half. Ehlinger scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Ehlinger hit Johnson for a two-point conversion.

Georgia scored 14 points in the second half. Fromm hit Hardman for a three-yard touchdown reception. Fromm hit Swift for a five-yard touchdown reception.

The Longhorns led 20-7 at halftime. Ehlinger scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown. Ehlinger also scored a nine-yard rushing touchdown.

Cameron Dicker made two field goals.

Bulldogs’ Fromm hit Herrien for a 17-yard touchdown reception.

  1. The final score is nowhere near how the game looked. Texas beat them out the gate. The Georgia players wanted to play on Twitter instead of the field. 72 yards rushing yards for Georgia on a average Texas defense. ND ran for a little more on arguably the best defensive front in the country. Georgia should think about themselves before others. Because they didn’t look like a top 4 team tonight.
