As we continue to hand our 2018 NFL Awards, our Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year is award to Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. This was a tough decision.
Mayfield beat out New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley for the award. These two players were the top two picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, but had the best performances of the season on the offensive-side of the ball.
He has also given the Browns hope that they previously not had in a very long time.
The 21-year-old Bronx, New York native had 261 carries for 1,307 yards in 16 starts with the Giants. He also had 11 touchdowns.
In addition, Barkley had 91 receptions for 721 yards and four additional touchdowns.
His best game of the season was in a 40-16 win over the Washington Redskins in Week 14 when he had 14 carries for 170 yards and a touchdown.
The 23-year-old Austin, Texas native ended the Browns quarterback problems in 2018. He went 6-7 in 13 starts and made 14 appearances overall.
After taking over for Tyrod Taylor after he suffered a concussion in Week 3 against the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football, Mayfield went 310 of 486 for 3,725 yards. He also had 27 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Mayfield had three games, where he threw for more than 300 yards. He had his first 300-yardage performance in Week 5 in a 12-9 win over the Baltimore Ravens when he went 25 of 43 for 342 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
He had a season-high performance in a 29-13 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 13. He went 29 of 43 for 397 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Mayfield closed out the season with another big performance, as he went 23 of 42 for 376 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
He had one four touchdown performance of the season in a Week 12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He went 19 of 26 for 258 yards and four touchdown in the game.
His worst performance in terms of yardage came in Week 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He went 22 of 36 for 180 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
