Steve Torrence’s historic streak to end last season has been snapped. He is the first Top Fuel driver to win all six of the Countdown to the Championship races.
Torrence was attempting to win his seventh straight win at the 59th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com on Monday. It would have tied Tony Schumacher’s record of seven straight wins.
However, Doug Kalitta put an end to that streak in the final round at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California. This is Kalitta’s second straight Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals win.
Kalitta went 4.014 at 269.29 mph to win the first Top Fuel wally of the 2019 season. Torrence, the runner-up, went 4.008 at 240.25 mph.
Prior to this final round, the Kilgore, Texas native had a 15-13 advance over the Ann Arbor, Michigan native. Torrence also held a 4-1 advantage over Kalitta in prior final rounds.
Kalitta had the starting line advantage and never trailed despite hazing the tires. He won by 0.0192 seconds, or approx. 7 feet.
This is Kalitta’s 45th national event win. This is his third Winternationals Wally, including his second straight.
Torrence also had his tired and was never able to recover.
