According to Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News’ Matt Breen, the Philadelphia Phillies are confident they will sign free agent Bryce Harper. He is the top free agent left on the market.
When Manny Machado signed with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, the focus turned to Harper. He is hoping to sign the richest free agent deal in MLB history.
Presently, Machado has that deal when he signed with the Padres. He signed a 10-year, $300 million deal.
Breen suggests that the two sides have ‘ramped up their negotiations with the outfielder after being motivated by losing out on Manny Machado.’ The Phillies wanted to add both Machado and Harper.
The Phillies have been the front-runner for Harper for weeks now. However, while they have been speculated as the front-runner, there has been no indication that the two sides are close.
The San Francisco Giants are the other known team left in the Harper sweepstakes.
The former National League MVP played seven seasons with the Nationals. In 2018, he had a .249 batting average with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs in 159 games.
The 34 home runs were the most since his career season in 2015 when he had 42 home runs. Harper also had 34 doubles on 137 hits, while scoring 103 runs in 2018.
