This weekend, the NHRA returns to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona for the Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals. Doug Kalitta will attempt to win back-to-back events.

Kalitta upset Steve Torrence in the final round of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com. He snapped Torrence’s six race win streak.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan native also won last season’s season-opener. That was his only win during the 2018 season.

While Kalitta will attempt to win back-to-back to begin the 2019 season, Torrence will attempt to win back-to-bace races at the facility. Torrence was the winner last season at this event.

He defeated Scott Palmer in the final round. The Kilgore, Texas native went 3.729 at 330.72 mph. The Cassville, Missouri native went 6.449 at 334.65 mph.

On the entry list, there is 16 Top Fuel Dragsters entered. At the season-opener, there were only 14.

Jordan Vandergriff is slated to make his NHRA debut at this event. Vandergriff will be piloting his uncle’s Bob Vandergriff Racing’s Top Fuel Dragster.

Billy Torrence, Terry Totten, Cameron Ferré, and James Maroney are expected to compete outside of the regulars. Maroney was on the entry list for Pomona; however, he did not show up.

One noticeable driver still sidelined is Tony Schumacher. He has not secured any sponsorship to race at this time.

Schumacher is also the all-time Top Fuel leader in wins at this facility. He is a five-time winner at the event with the last coming in 2015.

He also won in 2013, 2005, 2002, and 2000.

His Don Schumacher Racing teammate Antron Brown is the active pilot with the most Top Fuel wins at the track. He presently has three wins near Phoenix.

He has won in 2014, 2012, and 2009.
