Governors defeat No. 1 Commodores in extra innings

The Austin Peay Governors baseball team defeated the No. 1 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores. The Governors won 7-6 over the Commodores in 10 innings at Hawkins Field in Nashville, Tennessee. 

The Governors improved to 3-4 on the season. Austin Peay has won three straight games.


The Commodores fell to 6-2 on the season. Vanderbilt had their four-game win streak snapped with the loss.

This is the second straight year that Austin Peay has defeated a Top 5 team. Last May, the Governors defeated No. 5 Clemson Tigers. 

In addition, Austin Peay has come the first Ohio Valley Conference team to defeat the top-ranked team since 2009. The Jacksonville State Gamecocks defeated the Georgia Bulldogs. 

In the top of the 10th inning, the Governors scored two runs after the game was tied at 5-5 at the end of the ninth. Parker Phillips reached base on a fielder’s choice that scored Max Remy. 

The same inning saw Garrett Spain walk with the bases loaded. Gino Avros scored for the seventh run of the game. 

In the bottom half of the inning, JJ Bleday flew out to center field. Austin Martin scored on the play.

The Governors scored two runs in the ninth inning of the game. Matt Joslin singled to the right side of the field. Spain and Malcolm Tipler scored. 

Austin Peay also scored tow runs in the fifth inning. Garrett Kueber walked with the bases loaded as Andrew Flaherty scored. Tipler then doubled down the left field line as David Martinez scored. 

The Commodores had a 5-0 lead through the first three innings. Stephen Scott hit a three-run home run that also scored Philip Clarke and Austin Martin. 

Clarke also had an RBI single to fight field in the third inning. Cooper Davis scored on the play. 

Bleday singled up the middle in the first inning for the 1-0 lead. Martin scored on the play. 

Governors pitcher Brett Newberg received the win, as he improved to 1-2 on the season. He went three innings and allowed one run (one earned run) with five strikeouts and two walks on two hits in 11 batters. 

Commodores pitcher Gillis Jackson fell to 0-1 with the loss. He allowed two runs (two earned runs) with one strikeout and two walks in 1/3 of an inning.
