The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect in the shooting of Brent Hook, as one of his fellow competitors. 49-year-old Peter Zwart is the suspected gunman in this case.
Wood TV is reporting that Zwart allegedly shot Hook multiple times at Hook’s business on Tuesday morning. The incident, authorities believe, happened before 7:30 am local time.
At 7:30 am, the authorities have said that an employee of Hook’s business reported for work. After arriving at the location, the Tough Coat Custom Powder Coating on East D Ave., the employee found their boss shot and called for help.
Sheriff Richard Fuller also gave an update on Hook. He said that the Kalamazoo Speedway racer is still in critical condition after having to have emergency surgery after the shooting.
Zwart allegedly tipped his hand about being the suspect to his family, who then informed the authorities. This is how investigators allegedly found out that Zwart was the person of interest in the case.
While Zwart told his family that he was the alleged suspect, he was found dead at his Allegan County location. The authorities said that Zwart killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The authorities have admitted that Zwart and Hook have knew each other. However, they did not say how the two knew each other. We have been informed they were both races at the Kalamazoo Speedway track.
At this time, the investigation is still ongoing. The investigation will attempt to find a motive, because the authorities have not announced one yet.
