The Kansas City Royals have lost a key player before the season has even started. Catcher Salvador Pérez will have season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Perez is expected to have the operation next week, according to MLB Network’s Jon Herman. Following the second option, it was determined that the star catcher needed this operation.

He will return to the field at some point during the 2020 season.

Pérez suffered the injury to his right elbow on Wednesday. He was injured in a workout in Surprise, Arizona.

He has been with the Royals since the 2011 season.

The 28-year-old Valencia, Venezuela native — who will be 29 in May — is signed through the end of the 2021 season. He signed a five-year, $52.5 million on March 1st, 2016.

In 2018, he had a .235 batting average with 27 home runs and 80 RBIs in 129 games. He also had 23 doubles on 120 hits, while scoring 52 runs.

Pérez was the World Series MVP when the Royals defeated the New York Mets in the Fall Classic. He is also a six-time All-Star and a five-time Gold Glove Award winner.
