MacGinnis makes game-winner; Express defeats Fleet in Memphis

The Memphis Express earned their first win of the season. The Express defeated the San Diego Fleet, 26-23, on Saturday afternoon at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Express improved to 1-3 on the season. The win moves Memphis into third in the Eastern Conference.

They snapped their tie with the Atlanta Legends, who will also be looking for their first win this weekend. The Legends bring their 0-3 record into a game on Sunday night against the Arizona Hotshots.

The Fleet fell to 2-2. They are now in second place in the Western Conference with the loss.

The Hotshots — who have a 2-1 record — are presently the No. 1 team in the Western Conference for the time being.

Fleet quarterback Philip Nelson went 9 of 12 for 110 yards. He had one touchdown pass.

Alex Ross also saw action in the game. He went 8 of 18 for 80 yards. He had one touchdown pass and an interception.

Terrell Watson had 10 carries for 43 yards. Marcus Baugh had four receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Express quarterback Zach Mettenberger went 18 of 25 for 174 yards. He had one touchdown pass.

Zac Stacy had 18 carries for 39 yards. Reece Horn had four receptions for 63 yards.

The Express outscored the Fleet 11-3 in the second half. Mettenberger hit Terrence Magee for a six yard touchdown reception.

Austin MacGinnis made the game-winning field goal at 12:18 in the fourth quarter. He made a 45-yard field goal.

Fleet kicker Donny Hageman made a 46 yard field goal.

San Diego led 20-15 at halftime. Ron Books returned a punt for a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Nelson hit Dontez Ford for a six-yard touchdown reception. Watson converted the two-point conversion.

Ross hit Baugh for a 30-yard touchdown reception.

Express’ Mettenberger scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. MacGinnis made three first half field goals.

He first made a 46 yard field goal. He also added a 40-yard field goal. Finally, he made a 35-yard field goal.
