White Sox prospect Dunning sidelined with Tommy John surgery

Chicago White Sox prospect Dane Dunning underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Monday. He had the operation performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida.

The 24-year-old will miss the 2019 season. Depending on how his rehabilitation goes, he could miss even part of the 2020 season.

The Orange Park, Florida native was drafted in the 34th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2013 MLB Draft. After electing to go to college at the University of Florida, he was a first-round draft pick by the Washington Nationals in the 2016 MLB Draft.

He was traded on Dec. 8, 2016, by the Nationals to the White Sox. He was included in a package, also included were Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, for veteran Adam Eaton.

In his young career, he reached as high as Double-A in 2018 with the Birmingham Barons in the Southern League. He went 5-2 with a 2.76 ERA in 11 starts.

He allowed 24 runs (19 earned runs) on 57 hits over 62 innings. He also struck out 69 batters and walked 23.

In his career, he has a 17-13 record with a 2.74 ERA in 49 games, including three complete games and two shutouts. He has allowed 103 runs (81 earned runs), including 18 home runs, on 230 hits over 266 innings.
