Tulane Green Wave hires Ron Hunter as new men’s basketball head coach

The Tulane Green Wave has hired Ron Hunter to be their men’s basketball head coach. He replaced Mike Dunleavy Sr., who was fired after spending three seasons as the team’s head coach.

Hunter had been the Georgia State Panthers men’s basketball coach from 2011 through 2019. He had a 171-95 record with the Panthers, including a 99-49 conference mark in the Sun Belt Conference.

“I could not be more excited to welcome Ron and Amy Hunter and their family to Tulane University,” Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. . “Coach Hunter is a winner in every respect. We are thrilled to bring his leadership to our campus and the city of New Orleans.”

This past season, Hunter guided the Panthers to a 24-10 record. They were also 13-5 in the Sun Belt.

For the second straight year, they reached the Round of 64, before being eliminated. This year, the No. 3 Houston Cougars eliminated No. 14 Georgia State, 84-55, on March 22.

This is Hunter’s third head coaching position. Before Georgia State, he also was the IUPUI men’s basketball head coach from 1994 through 2011. He had a 274-219 record at the school.

Hunter also was 114-86 conference mark in the NAIA Independent, Mid-Continent Conference, and The Summit League.

Before IUPUI, he was an assistant coach with the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks from 1993-94. He also served as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Panthers from 1987 through 1993.
