The UCLA Bruins has hired Mick Cronin as their new men’s basketball head coach. The Bruins take a world-wind tour during the process to land Cronin, as several coaches turned down the job.
The 47-year-old Cincinnati, Ohio native will receive a $4 million salary. He leaves his alma mater at the University of Cincinnati to make this move.
“Mick Cronin is a fierce competitor, and I’m excited to welcome him to Westwood,” Athletic Director Dan Guerrero said. “Mick has built a fantastic program at Cincinnati, backed by integrity and discipline, and he has instilled an undeniable toughness in his student-athletes. I am confident he will build this program the right way and lead UCLA basketball back to national prominence.”
He is taking over a program that went 17-16 in 2018-19. The team also had a 9-9 conference record.
The Bruins went 13-5 at home. But they were 4-11 on the road.
“I am incredibly humbled and honored to become the head coach at UCLA,” said Cronin. “I’m especially grateful to Chancellor Block and to Dan Guerrero for this opportunity to join the Bruin Family. UCLA is a very special place with a strong tradition of excellence. To be able to join such a world-class institution is truly a privilege, and I can’t wait to get started in Westwood.”
Cronin was the Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball coach from 2006 through 2009. With the Bearcats, he had a 196-146 record, including a 135-87 record in the Big East Conference and the American Athletic Conference.
This season, he guided the Bearcats to a 28-7 record. Cincinnati had a 14-4 record in the AAC.
The team was eliminated in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament Round of 64.
Cronin has guided his team to the NCAA Tournament nine straight years. He guided the team to the Sweet 16 in 2011-12.
Before being hired by Cincinnati, he spent three seasons as the Murray State Racers. He went 69-24 overall with a 42-10 conference mark in the Ohio Valley Conference.
He also spent time as an assistant coach with the Louisville Cardinals and the Bearcats. Cronin began his coaching career an assistant coach with the Woodward High School Bulldogs.
