There’s no doubt that the 66-year-old New York, New York native can coach. He is presently the head coach of Panathinaikos in the Greek Basket League.
Pitino was named the Panathinaikos on Dec. 26, 2018. The agreement was to coach the team until the end of the season.
He has not coached in the NBA since 2001 with the Boston Celtics. He was their head coach from 1997 through 2001.
Pitino was the Louisville Cardinals head coach from 2001 through 2017. He was fired for cause on Oct. 16, 2017 after a “pay for play” scandal rocked the program.
Besides being the Celtics head coach, he also coached the New York Knicks for two seasons from 1987 through 1989. He also served as a Knicks assistant coach from 1983 through 1985.
