AAA of Southern California Funny Car pilot Robert Hight is on a hot streak. He claimed his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season through six races.
The Yorba Linda, California native claimed the top spot on Saturday with a 3.883 at 325.92 mph at the 10th annual NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina. Hight used his final qualifying pass of the weekend to get the No. 1 qualifier.
“I don’t think I’ve ever in my career had a car that’s this dominant,” Hight said. “When you really look at how competitive the class is, from one to twelve, there’s just hundredths of a second separating us. It’s pretty amazing for us to be running this well and it makes my job pretty easy. You know that this car is going to go down the track as long as you don’t screw it up.”
Hight will lead the first quad as he will face Bob Gilbertson in the first pairing. Also in this quad will be reigning Funny Car champion J.R. Todd and Bob Tasca III.
The second quad will feature 2012 World Champion Jack Beckman, who will face Dave Richards in his pairing. Tim Wilkerson will also be in this quad with a matchup against Ron Capps.
Living legend John Force will lead the third quad as he faces long-time rival Cruz Pedregon. This pairing will also including two-time World Champion Matt Hagan and Jonnie Lindberg.
The final quad will feature Tommy Johnson Jr. and “The Surfer” Jeff Diehl in one pairing. The second pairing of this quad will feature Shawn Langdon and Terry Haddock.
There were three drivers, who did not qualify. These were Bob Bode, Dale Creasy Jr., and Jim Campbell.
