The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired Gersson Rosas as their new President of Basketball Operations. Rosas had his second interview with the team on Wednesday when he was offered the position.
He will work with GM Scott Layden and head coach Ryan Saunders. Both were working on multi-year extensions after the season.
Rosas is the first Latino top basketball executive, according to Wojnarowski. The last person, who had this title with the Timberwolves was Tom Thibodeau, who served as Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations until he was fired in Jan. 2019.

He accepts the Timberwolves position after being considered for a position with the Washington Wizards. Besides Rosas, Danny Ferry — who was most recently the interim GM of the New Orleans Pelicans — and Oklahoma City Thunder Vice President of Basketball Operations Troy Weaver, and Wizards Interim GM Tommy Sheppard are being considered for the Wizards permanent GM role.
“Gersson has been an unbelievable person to work with,” Morey told ESPN. “He’s been way overqualified for his job for a while here. He’s more than earned his shot, although I wish he would’ve gone East. We’re going to have an extremely tough competitor in the West.
“Minnesota is going to find how forward-thinking, how hard working and how talented he is at putting together a winning team.”
Before coming to the Timberwolves, he worked under Morey with the Rockets. He most recently served as their Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations from Dec. 2013 through 2019.
Rosas also worked for the Rockets from Aug. 2004 through July 2013. He began with the team as a video coordinator, before moving up through the ranks.
He had also served as the GM of the Rio Grande Valley team, the Rockets D-League team, in four seasons. His team won two championships and made it to the D-League Finals in three of those four seasons.
He also served as the Dallas Mavericks GM for several months in 2013. Rosas resigned from the Mavericks job after he felt uncomfortable working with owner Mark Cuban and president Donnie Nelson.
