Brooklyn Nets guard D’Angelo Russell — who made his All-Star game debut in February 2019 — has been cited for marijuana possession at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday. He was detained following a baggage check, according to the New York Port Authority Police.

He was traveling to Louisville, Kentucky when he was detained. He was summoned for possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and was released after some time being detained.

During the search, the marijuana was found in a hidden compartment of an Arizona Ice Tea can that Russell had with him.

The Nets said they are gathering more information on the situation. Russell — who will be a restricted free agent this off-season — hopes to be re-signed by Brooklyn to keep their young core together.

Russell was the No. 2 overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA Draft. Two years later, he was dealt to the Nets in a deal.

He was traded to the Nets, along with Timofey Mozgov, for Brook Lopez and the 27th pick in the 2017 NBA draft. The 27th pick turned into Kyle Kuzma.

Russell appeared in 81 games, including 81 starts. He had a career-best 21.1 points per game with 3.9 rebounds, 7.0 assist, 1.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks in 30.2 minutes per game.
