The Oregon Ducks were able to secure quarterback Justin Gilbert for another season. Gilbert — who was considered the No. 1 overall pick before electing to return to college — will play out his final season during the fall.
As Gilbert’s career will come to an end in the next few months, Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal landed a huge quarterback recruit on Friday night that will help lessen the blow from the loss of Gilbert. He landed Four-star pro-style quarterback Jay Butterfield.
“Thank you to everyone who supported me through this process and thank you to every program that believed in me and offered me the opportunity to play the game I love while continuing my education,” Butterfield said on Twitter. “I am humbled and grateful.”
The California native was regarded as one of the best quarterback prospects in the 2020 class. This also gives a boost to that class.
Cristobal was able to land the No. 1 recruit in the country for the 2019 class. He also had the seventh-best recruiting class in the country.
He is regarded as the 78th overall recruit in the country for the 2020 class. In addition, he’s regarded as the 13th-best recruit in California.
According to multiple media reports, Butterfield’s commitment to the Ducks now gives them the No. 1 class in the Pac-12 Conference. If they are able to secure this, it’ll be the second straight year they have made the No. 1 recruiting class in the conference.
