Reigning champ Smith claims provisional PSM lead at 2019 Virginia Nationals

Matt Smith is the provisional Pro Stock Motorcycle No. 1 qualifier on Friday at the Virginia NHRA Nationals. The King, North Carolina native went 6.844 at 197.91 mph at Virginia Motorsports Park in North Dinwiddie, Virginia. 

The reigning PSM champion is looking to secure his second No. 1 qualifier of the season. If his numbers hold up on Saturday, it’ll be his 33rd No. 1 qualifier of his career.

“We’re still working on our 60-foot times, especially since we got the weight added on us, but we’ve been testing a lot on that,” Smith said. “We had been giving up five or six hundredths before and now we’re giving up two or three hundredths. I think we’ll be back up at the top again soon.”

Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson is the provisional No. 2 qualifier. The Avon, Indiana native went 6.850 at 195.56 mph. 

His Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson are also provisional No. 3 qualifier and provisional No. 4 qualifier. Angelle Sampey, the Mathews, Louisiana native, went 6.873 at 193.02 mph. 

The Brownsburg, Indiana native Andrew Hines — who has won the past two Pro Stock Motorcycle events — went 6.874 at 195.42 mph. 

Lucas Oil sponsored Hector Arana Jr. is the provisional No. 5 qualifier. The East Northport, New York native went 6.878 at 192.77 mph.

13. Angie Smith, EBR, 6.986, 188.91

14. Scotty Pollacheck, EBR, 6.988, 189.87

15. Kelly Clontz, Suzuki, 7.020, 191.62

16. Jianna Salinas, Suzuki, 11.085, 73.14
