Deontay Wilder returned to his winning ways on Saturday night. After suffering a draw against Tyson Fury in December, Wilder wasted no time in dispatching Dominic Breazeale on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
He knocked out Breazeale with one punch with 17 seconds left in the first round. Breazeale was able to get up from the 10 count; however, he was in no condition to continue.
The 33-year-old Tuscaloosa, Alabama native improved to 41-0-1 in his boxing career.
This is Wilder’s first knockout in the first round since he defeated Bermane Stiverne on Nov. 4, 2017. That fight was also at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
In addition, this is his ninth title defense of his WBC heavyweight title. He won the WBC heavyweight title against Stiverne on Jan. 17, 2015 in at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Forty of Wilder’s 41 wins have come via knockout. The only fight that was not a knockout was the unanimous decision win over Stiverne in 2015.
The 33-year-old Glendale, California native suffered his second loss of his career. He dropped to 20-2 in his career.
This loss to Wilder snapped his three-fight win streak. He defeated Izu Ugonoh, Éric Molina, and Carlos Negrón during the win streak before the first-round knockout to Wilder.
Breazeale suffered his second knockout of his career against Wilder. The first knockout of his career came against Anthony Joshua by TKO in the seventh-round of their June 25, 2016 fight at The O2 Arena in London, England.
Both of the losses against Wilder and Joshua were title bouts. Besides losing the WBC Heavyweight title against Wilder, he also lost a chance for the IBF Heavyweight title against Joshua.
