According to a report from The Score, Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James had ‘contact’ with Toronto Raptors Star Kawhi Leonard. In addition, he also reportedly had contact with Philadelphia 76ers star Jimmy Butler.
Both are slated to be free agents this summer. However, according to reports, Leonard does not want to play for the Lakers because of James.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who has covered James since his high school days, made the allegation on Pardon the Interruption. James has to watch out that he’s not tampering.
Yet, Windhorst said “there’s no tampering among players.”
While the Lakers will have enough money to sign one free agent to a max contract, it does not appear like any of the major free agents will put on the purple and gold. Some reports suggest that key free agents, like Leonard, would prefer to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.
If they strike out on the open market, the Lakers may kickstart those trade talks with New Orleans Pelicans center Anthony Davis once again. They struck out in a potential deal in February.
Despite potentially being partnered with Zion Williamson, Davis does not want to be part of the team moving forward. With David Griffin and Trajan Langdon running the show in New Orleans, Davis may finally get his wish to be traded.
Pelicans owner Gayle Benson reportedly said “over my dead body” when trading Davis to the Lakers. However, she called it “totally absurd,” according to WDSU’s Fletcher Mackel.
