He got hurt just minutes after being on the court in the second quarter. Before playing in Game 5, Durant had been sidelined with a right calf strain for the past month.

“My road back starts now!” Durant wrote in the caption. “I got my family and loved ones by my side and we truly appreciate all the messages and support people have sent our way. Like I said Monday, I’m hurting deeply, but I’m OK. Basketball is my biggest love and I wanted to be out there that night because that’s what I do. I wanted to help my teammates on our quest for the three peat.

“Its just the way things go in this game and I’m proud that I gave it all I physically could, and I’m proud my brothers got the W. It’s going to be a journey but I’m built for this. I’m a hooper I know my brothers can get this Game 6, and I will be cheering with dub nation while they do it.”

Durant had the operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said that the team did not believe that when he returned in Game 5, he would have risked serious injury.

“Kevin checked all the boxes,” Kerr said. “He was cleared to play by everybody involved. Now, would we go back and do it over again? Damn right. But that’s easy to say with the results.

“When we gathered all the information, our feeling was the worst thing that could happen would be a re-injure of the calf. That was the advice and the information that we had. At that point, once Kevin was cleared to play, he was comfortable with that, we were comfortable with that. So the Achilles came as a complete shock.”

Now, with Durant having this procedure, it is highly unlikely that he plays next season. He is going to have a lengthly recovery process that may take up to one calendar year before he is able to play once again.

Will he be able to play up to his high level of play once he returns? Time will tell if that will be the case.

Despite being hurt, teams are already saying they will pursue Durant in free agency. The Top 2 player in the league is a game-changer, as he could sway the dominance to the team he signs with.

His injury could potentially lead to him re-signing with the Warriors. However, the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets, and the New York Knicks will all try to pry him away from the Warriors.

He has a $31.5 million option for next season. Once he opts-out, he could potentially get anywhere north of $40 million per season.

The Warriors do have one super max slot to sign Durant if they choose to do so. Golden State has Stephen Curry signed to the other super max deal.

Teams are only allowed two super max deals.
