According to reports, the Dominican Republic authorities have released the name of the mastermind, who they believe is responsible for the David Ortíz assassination attempt. It is fugitive Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota.
The authorities have said Mota paid a middleman, who then paid alleged gunman Rolfi Ferreras Cruz to shoot the baseball great in the hit. The middleman, Gabriel Alexander Perez Vizcaino, aka “Bone,” was sentenced to one year in jail on Monday.
Ortíz was shot on June 9 at a bar in Santo Domingo. Not only was Ortíz shot, but his friend Jhoel Lopez was shot in the leg with the same billet that hit Ortíz.
After being shot from behind, Ortíz was rushed to a nearby hospital in his native country. Once he arrived, he underwent emergency surgery.
He had his gallbladder removed. In addition, he had part of his intestines removed, as well.
One day after the shooting, Ortíz was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass., where he underwent a second surgery. He has been there since.
While Ortíz recovers, the authorities continue to put the pieces together in this senseless attack.
