Kyle Cooper has resigned as the head football coach at Gatesville High School. He has accepted a role on the Mount Vernon High School football staff.
Cooper will be joining the staff of Art Briles, who was hired by the school in May. Briles returns to Texas high school football after being the Houston Cougars and Baylor Bears head coach.
While Cooper has accepted a role at Mount Vernon, his role with the team is undetermined at this time. He told Channel 6 (KCEN TV) that he will be working with the offense.
Cooper spent 13 seasons as the Gatesville head coach. He guided the team to a 63-67 record with five playoff appearances.
Gatesville had a 3-7 record in 2018.
His decision will have ramifications, because the Gatesville program will have to do a search and find a coach with approx. one month before training begins for the new season.
Cooper previously played for Briles at Baylor.
