Hurricanes match Aho’s offer sheet from Canadiens

The Carolina Hurricanes have matched the offer sheet to center Sebastian Aho. The Montreal Canadiens signed Aho to a five-year, $42.27 million offer sheet.

The Hurricanes had seven days to either accept the offer sheet or let Aho walk to the Canadiens. It only took one day for Carolina to make up their minds and accept the offer.

“We’re surprised,” Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon said to The News & Observer about the offer sheet. “We love the player and we’re happy to have this done. And surprised someone would have thought this would work.

“We were never going to let him go. He didn’t want to go. This is just part of the business of getting the deal done. I said the day I bought the team and nothing has changed, he’s one of — if not — the most important part of our future and we’re lucky to have him.”

This offer sheet was front-loaded by the Canadiens. It will have an average salary of $8.454 million; however, he will receive $21 million in the first year of the contract.

The 21-year-old Rauma, Finland native has spent the last three seasons with the Hurricanes. He had a career-best 30 goals and 53 assists for 83 points in 82 games.

He also had 25 +/- and 26 PIM during the 2018-19 season.

Twenty three of Aho’s goals were even strength. He also had three power play and four short-handed goals. Aho also has seven game-winners.

In his three seasons in the league, he has 83 goals and 114 assists for 197 points in 242 games. He also has 28 +/- and 76 PIM.

Sixty one goals of his career have been even strength goals. He also has seventeen power play goals and five short-handed goals. Fifteen goals have been game winners.
