Rainbow Warriors player Scheyenne Sanitoa passed away

Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors linebacker Scheyenne Sanitoa has passed away. He died on the Fourth of July.

The cause of death is not known at this time. According to the Star Advertiser, Sanitoa died in Hawai’i.

“It’s with deep sorrow that we share the tragic news that Scheyenne Sanitoa, a student-athlete with our Rainbow Warrior football team, passed away yesterday at the age of 21,” Rainbow Warriors Athletics Director David Matlin said in a statement. “Scheyenne was a tremendous young man and we are devastated by this news.

“It’s always heartbreaking to lose a member of our UH ‘ohana, particularly when it’s one of our young student-athletes. Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, his teammates, and all those who knew and loved him.”

Sanitoa played the last two seasons with the Rainbow Warriors. He red-shirted the 2016 season.

This past season, he had 30 tackles, including 4.0 tackles for a loss, in eight games. He also had 2.0 sacks and two pass deflections.

In his two seasons of college football, he has 31 tackles, including 4.0 tackles for a loss. He also has 2.0 sacks and two pass deflections.

During the 2018 season, Sanitoa also had one punt return for 12 yards.

With his death, the Rainbow Warriors will honor their teammate in some way during the upcoming season.
