Boxing legend Pernell Whitaker dies

According to WAVY TV, boxing legend Pernell “Sweat Pea” Whitaker was killed on Sunday night in Virginia. He was hit by a vehicle in Virginia Beach.

Whitaker was 55.

The authorities were called to the scene at approx. 10 pm. Whitaker was hit in the intersection between Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road. 

He died from his injuries at the scene after being located by the authorities. Police said the driver, who hit Whitaker, remained at the scene as the investigation was ongoing. 

Medical personnel attempted to resuscitate Whitaker, including performing CPR, according to TMZ, before his death. 

In his boxing career, Whitaker went 40-4-1-1 in 46 bouts. He also had 17 wins by knockout.

In 2006, he was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He was honored on his first year of eligibility as a candidate.

Whitaker last competed in the ring against Carlos Bojorquez when he was knocked out in the fourth round of the 10 bout fight on April 17, 2001 at Caesars Tahoe in Stateline, Nevada.

He had three losses and a no contest in his final four bouts. His last win came over Diosbelys Hurtado with an 11th round TKO at the Convention Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey to retain the WBC and lineal welterweight titles.
