Funny Cars return to Thunder Mountain this weekend on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado. This is race No. 14 of the 2019 season.
The Dodge Mile-High Nationals presented by Pennzoil will take place from Friday, July 19th through Sunday, July 21st. This will be the toughest challenge for all the teams, as this event is 5,800 feet above sea level — the highest of any of the 24 events on the schedule.
Living legend John Force will attempt to win the 2019 Dodge Mile-High Nationals for the second straight year. Last year, the then-69-year-old defeated Ron Capps in the final round.
Force — who will look to win his 150th career win this weekend — went 4.075 at 315.42 mph in his last win over the past calendar year. Capps went 4.067 at 308.71 mph in the losing effort.
Both Force and Capps are slated to compete this weekend. John Force Racing pilot Robert Hight will also be competing, as well.
Capps’ Don Schumacher Racing teammates Matt Hagan, Jack Beckman, and Tommy Johnson Jr. will also be there. Hagan will debut the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat widebody graphics package this weekend.
Both of Kalitta Motorsports pilots will be on the mountain in J.R. Todd, the reigning Funny Car champion, and Shawn Langdon. Levi, Ray, and Shoup Inc. Funny Car pilot Tim Wilkerson will be on the mountain, as well.
Snap-On Tools Funny Car pilot Cruz Pedregon will be at Bandimere as the tuner and pilot. Bob Tasca III — who won two events in June at Bristol and Norwalk — will try to win his third event in four races.
Jim Dunn Racing pilot Jim Campbell will also be on the property.
There will be 15 Funny Cars on the property. Every driver will make the show on Sunday, as the No. 1 qualifier will receive a bye.
Other Funny Car pilots on the property include Terry Haddock, Todd Simpson, and “The Surfer” Jeff Diehl.
Force is the all-time winner on the mountain. He has eight career wins, including two in the last three events. John Force Racing has won the past three events on the mountain.
Force won in 2018, 2016, 2011, 2003, 2001, 1996, 1995, and 1994. Hight won on the mountain in 2017.
