Boxer Hugo Alfredo Santillan dies

For the second time in three days, another boxer has died. This time, Hugo Alfredo “Dinamita” Santillan died on Thursday. He was 23.

He passed away after suffering injuries sustained in his bout against fellow boxer Eduardo Javier Abreu. Following the fight, he underwent surgery to remove a clot in his brain and twice had a cardiorespiratory failure, according to ESPN, before he died.

He passed away at 12:35 am local time.

The Argentina native was 19-6-2 in his boxing career. He also had eight knockouts, while he was knocked out twice in two of his losses.

In the bout that ultimately led to his death, Santillan lost via a split decision at Club Atlético in San Nicolás, Argentina for the World Boxing Council Latino Silver Lightweight Title. According to BoxRec, judge Carlos Azzinnaro saw a 95-95 draw.

Judge Ramon Cerdan gave Abreu a 96-94 win over Santillan, while judge Roman Pereyra gave Santillan a 97=93 win.

On Tuesday, fellow boxer Maxim Dadashev died. He was 28.

He died following injuries sustained in a fight on Friday in Maryland against Subriel Matias. Following the contest, Dadashev was rushed to UM Prince George’s Hospital Center, where he had emergency surgery.

He suffered a subdural hematoma — bleeding from the brain — and suffered severe brain damage. Dadashev was 13-1 in his boxing career.
