Gervonta Davis defeated Ricardo Núñez in their fight at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. Davis won the bout via a second round TKO to retain his WBA Super Featherweight World Championship.
This was Davis’ first title defense as a champion. In addition, this was the first title fight in Baltimore in nearly 50 years.
“Tonight, we showed out,” he said. “It’s amazing to fight in front of my hometown fans, my family. It’s an incredible feeling. It’s not just a win for me, it’s a win for Baltimore. I want to do it again.
“I’m always ready. He wasn’t. He wasn’t alert and I caught it with my third punch. I got him with a body shot. I caught him with a really nice shot. That was it.”
This was Davis’ 22nd win. In his career, 21 of his wins have come via knockout. His lone knockout came against German Meraz in 2014.
He has won his last 13 fights by knockout.
Davis wants Tevin Farmer next.
“I have the WBA belt and I have the IBF belt,” said the undefeated Davis, who lost the IBF in 2017 after failing to make weight. “Tevin Farmer fought tonight. I want Tevin. That’s a fight that can be made. Let’s get it on later this year.”
Núñez fell to 21-3 in his boxing career. The Panama native suffered his second knockout in his career.
He was defeated by Barnie Arguelles in Panama City on January 21, 2015. Arguelles won in the second round.
His 10-fight win streak was snapped with this loss.
