ATCO, NJ — Moduline Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Mathew Gill is now a two-time winner at Atco Dragway. Gill’s win was over at the line, though.
The West Bridgewater, Massachusetts native went 5.485 at 270.00 mph. DJ Cox lost, as the Whiteford, Maryland native was -0.26 red.
“I was at half track when my win light came on,” Gill said. “I was on a good pass and I wanted to see what I could run. I just stuck with it.”
Gill picked up his eighth Divisional win on Saturday night.
“It feels good,” he said. “I like the track and it’s always been a good track. It’s good to extend my points lead. That’s what we came here for.”
This win also snapped Phil Burkhart Jr.’s TAFC win streak at the track. Burkhart Jr. won the 2017 and 2018 events with the Permatex/Follow A Dream team.
Burkhart Jr. did not compete at this event, as the Follow A Dream team lost its major sponsor Permatex last off-season. Their plan is to compete at the New England Divisional, then compete at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals Presented By Pennzoil at Maple Grove Raceway in Sept.
With this win, three drivers now have two wins at Atco. Besides Burkhart Jr.’s two wins, Cox and Gill also have two wins each.
Gill previously won in 2015. Cox won in 2014 and 2016.
“If were able to continue the way we’re running, I think we’re going to have a good shot at winning a national,” he said. “That’s one of our big goals. I think we could potentially win it at Maple Grove.”
